    Job Responsibilities

    The Health & Safety Program Manager is responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of regulatory and policy compliance including but not limited to employee and patient health and safety.  The Program Manager must have or develop comprehensive knowledge of applicable laws and best practices, including federal and state OSHA regulations, state dental practice act provisions, CDC, FDA, infection control, personal protective equipment, MSDS, medical and hazardous waste management regulations and other sources of law and best practice.  The Program Manager shall assist in training of employees to ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state health and safety regulations and conduct regular visits to the dental offices for training, auditing, safety committee management and compliance activity in connection with the duties and responsibilities of the position.

     

    Essential Position Functions

    • Responsible for effective direction, management and operation of the company infection prevention and control program, including formulating changes in policies and procedures and/or processes, which could reduce and prevent exposures and the spread of infection.
    • In conjunction with clinical leadership, develop and implement company policies, procedures, and guidelines that ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
    • Conduct ongoing reviews of policy and procedure, identifies gaps, implements revisions, and devises action plans for process improvement for infection control and sterilization procedures.
    • Identify, make recommendations, and carry out necessary steps to ensure compliance with occupational safety and health regulations in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.
    • Aid in coordination of emergency response to biological and chemical spills, exposures and accidents, hazardous chemical and biological waste disposals and coordinating the inspection of all areas for potentially dangerous situations regarding hazardous waste.
    • Research and communicate necessary action or procedural changes to correct areas not in compliance with regulations.
    • Coordinate functions of comprehensive health and safety programs within the organization, developing safer and healthier ways of working.
    • Chair and lead monthly company Health & Safety Committee meetings.
    • Resource to provide information to employees on all health and safety and infection prevention and control related items.
    • Assist the department to address, implement, and continually improve all health and safety and infection prevention and control programs, education, and training in accordance with applicable law and Willamette Dental policy and procedures.
    • Oversee, coordinate and assist in the activities of the Safety Committee at each location.
    • Coordinate with department to ensure completion of annual safety inspections and evaluation of workplace environments, equipment, and practices for compliance with corporate and government health and safety standards and regulations. Will include travel as needed.
    • Act as a resource and subject matter expert on standard operation procedures for sterilization and maintenance of large and small equipment and ensures standardization and training of these procedures.
    • Oversee and coordinate compliance with standards and requirements with regard to personal protective equipment.
    • Oversee, direct and assist in preparing reports and data as needed for the materials and equipment selection committees, in compliance with the BBP standard of evaluating safer medical devices.
    • Work cooperatively with HR, Worker’s Compensation, and Operations to ensure safety and loss control activities are conducted in accordance with H&S policy, procedure, law and standards.
    • Produce correspondence and documents, maintain presentations, records, spreadsheets and databases, and handle maintenance and asset management.
    • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks.

     

    Non-Essential Position Functions

    • Arrange both in-house and external events.
    • Attend meetings, taking minutes and keeping notes.
    • Additional duties as assigned.

    Job Qualifications

    Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety & Health or other related field and 3 – 5 years’ related work experience (preferably in the dental field performing technical health and safety work) OR equivalent combination of education and experience which will provide the ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Clinical training as a dental assistant or hygienist preferred. Certification in Infection Control (CIC) preferred.

     

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

     

    Knowledge of:

    • Law and best practices pertaining to healthcare workers and dental clinic environment.
    • Experience or aptitude in regulatory analysis and compliance.
    • Awareness of and ability to facilitate administration of hazardous communication and MSDS policies and procedures.
    • Awareness of and ability to facilitate administration of medical and hazardous waste generated within the dental clinic operating environment.

    Skill in:

    • Excellent research, writing and communication skills pertinent to health and safety objectives in the dental industry.
    • Microsoft Office Suite and EMaint software.
    • Leading work groups that are in decentralized locations and accomplishing work through others.

    Ability to:

    • Represent the company in a professional manner, including verbal and written communication skills.

    Physical Requirements

    The work is primarily performed while sitting and/or standing, but will require occasional walking, bending, stooping and carrying light items such as papers, books, or other supplies. The incumbent uses a computer and other standard office equipment to complete tasks.
